Here’s your Foodette Fact of the Day!

Today’s dish we’re highlighting is literally called Lion’s Head Meatball. It is a Shanghainese dish that is typically served like a casserole. So what’s with its unique name?

The name comes from the large meatballs, which is said to look like the lion’s head. The veggies are supposed to be its mane. Depending on where you get yours from, there can be salty egg yolk center that gives a nice contrast to the ground pork in the meatball. When the meatballs are in soup, there is no yolk inside. I got my order to go so it wasn’t assembled in its original form by the time I got home.

It’s hard to tell from this angle, but the meatballs or lion heads are very big. They’re made of ground pork and are very moist. There are many places that sell frozen lion heads, but of course getting them fresh is best.

Where to get them: Giang Nan in Monterey Park

Foodette K also had them in soup. Both are fantastic.
