Today’s Foodette Fact of The Day is centered around Kaya!
Kaya is a coconut jam that is very popular in Southeast Asia and made from a base of coconut and sugar. It is available as a golden brown or green color depending on the amount of pandan used and how carmalized the sugar becomes in the process.
Kaya toast is a popular snack amongst Singaporeans and Malaysians. A great place to order the spread made fresh in the San Gabriel Valley is from Yazmin. Though their Malaysian dinners don’t do it for me, their Kaya jam is done really well. It’s $5 a box. Make sure to keep it in the fridge. It’s best eaten with thick toast. Spread a layer of butter or margarine before the kaya for ultimate tastiness.
P.S. I didn’t have any white bread in the house so I just used a walnut bread I had at home. Still delicious! Make sure to have it ordered and freshly made. If it’s not fresh, it’s not nearly as good!
